Eco-friendly cardboard packaging: how green is it really?

Plain brown corrugated boxes, folded flat and tied together for separate paper waste collection

Cardboard is generally regarded as eco-friendly packaging. It is made from renewable plant fibres and is recycled through standard paper and cardboard collection. Still, the real impact of eco-friendly cardboard packaging depends on where the raw material comes from, how it is produced and how the packaging is used. Below we explain, without exaggeration, what makes cardboard packaging eco-friendly and what you should check.

What is cardboard packaging made from?

Corrugated board is made from cellulose fibres. These come from wood or from recycled paper and cardboard.

Wood used in industry has two main sources:

  • wood from forestry operations, which can be managed responsibly, with replanting;
  • residues from other wood industries, such as shavings or sawdust from sawmills.

Recycled fibres are an important part of the raw material for corrugated board. However, each recycling cycle shortens the fibres. That is why new fibres are constantly added to the loop.

Is eco-friendly cardboard packaging recyclable?

Yes. Corrugated board is recycled through separate collection of paper and cardboard waste. The recovered fibres become raw material for new board.

Recyclability does come with conditions. A few things can make it harder:

  • dirt and grease, such as food residues;
  • wax or plastic coatings, which are hard to separate from the fibre;
  • adhesive tape and plastic labels left on the box;
  • prolonged moisture, which degrades the fibres.

A plain cardboard pack with no plastic layers is the easiest to recycle. Fold the boxes flat and remove the tape before putting them out for collection.

Is cardboard biodegradable?

Cellulose fibres are of plant origin and break down over time. How fast depends on the conditions: moisture, temperature, and the type of inks and adhesives used.

Biodegradability is not the main argument, though. For cardboard, recycling is the better option, because the fibre is used again.

What do FSC and ISO 14001 certification mean?

Two certifications help you check what lies behind the word "eco-friendly".

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is a certification system for responsible forest management. Chain-of-custody certification tracks the material from the forest to the finished product. This makes it possible to show that the fibre comes from controlled sources.

ISO 14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems. It does not certify a specific product. It certifies that a company identifies its environmental impact, monitors it and works to reduce it.

We follow ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001. On request, the raw material can be FSC®-certified; mention this in your quote request.

How can you make your packaging more eco-friendly?

The material matters, but so does the way you use it. A few practical steps:

  • Size the box to the product. Less empty space means less material and less void fill.
  • Choose the right board. Board that is too heavy wastes material. Board that is too weak leads to damage and repacking.
  • Replace plastic void fill with cardboard dividers, inserts or edge protectors.
  • Optimise palletising. Correctly sized boxes reduce empty space in the lorry.
  • Keep printing simple, without coatings that make recycling harder.

We offer packaging design and engineering, including to reduce the amount of material used.

Conclusion

Cardboard packaging is an eco-friendly choice when the raw material comes from controlled sources, the box is correctly sized and the packaging ends up being recycled. FSC and ISO 14001 certification give you a verifiable criterion, not just a promise. For packaging sized to your product, send a quote request or see our product range.

Frequently asked questions

Can corrugated cardboard packaging be recycled more than once?

Yes, the fibres can be recycled several times. They get shorter with each cycle, which is why new fibres are also added.

Can I get packaging made from FSC-certified material?

Yes. On request, the raw material can be FSC®-certified. Mention the requirement in your quote request and we will discuss the right option.

Can pressed cardboard edge protectors replace plastic protection?

In many applications, yes. Pressed cardboard edge protectors protect the edges and stabilise the load on the pallet.
