Folding cardboard boxes are the basic packaging for storage and transport in almost every industry. This article explains what an RSC box is, where it is used and how to choose the right dimensions. You will also see what to send us for a fast quote.
What are folding cardboard boxes?
A folding box is a corrugated box that is delivered flat and assembled when needed. The most common style is the regular slotted container (RSC), coded FEFCO 0201. It has four flaps at the top and four at the bottom, closed with tape, staples or glue.
The flat format has a clear advantage: the boxes take up little space until you need them. They are efficient to transport and store, and quick to assemble, either by hand or on automatic packing lines.
Where are folding cardboard boxes used?
Folding boxes cover both storage and transport, on a small or large scale. They are used in warehouses, lorries, containers and air freight.
Common applications:
- manufacturing: packing finished products and components moving between plants;
- logistics and warehousing: organising stock on shelves and pallets;
- trade and distribution: shipping orders to customers and shops;
- export: long-distance transport, together with pallets and additional protection;
- archiving: long-term storage of documents and materials.
Correct labelling on the boxes speeds up warehouse operations. Products are easier to find and stocktaking is faster.
Why do companies choose the RSC box (FEFCO 0201)?
No tooling cost
An RSC box is produced without a dedicated cutting die. This means you do not pay for special tooling on your first order. For small volumes or new sizes, the saving matters.
Sized to your product
At WEPADI, RSC boxes are produced from standard sizes up to 2000 × 1000 × 1000 mm. A box made to measure reduces empty space inside. The product moves less and you need less void fill.
Efficient storage
Delivered flat, folding cardboard boxes take up a fraction of the space of assembled boxes. You can keep stock to hand without filling up your warehouse.
Recyclable material
Corrugated board is easy to recycle. WEPADI follows ISO 14001, and on request the raw material can be FSC®-certified, which helps companies with environmental requirements in their supply chain.
How do you choose the right size and board?
A well-chosen box starts with the product and the journey it makes. Before you order, clarify the following:
- internal dimensions: length, width and height of the product, plus room for any inserts;
- weight of the contents: this determines the thickness and type of corrugated board;
- mode of transport: individual parcel, pallet or container;
- stacking: how many boxes are stacked on top of each other in the warehouse;
- storage conditions: dry areas or areas with variable humidity.
If the products need to be separated inside, dividers or inserts can be added to the box. For heavy or bulky goods, industrial corrugated boxes are also worth considering.
You do not need to know every technical detail from the start. Our team will help you choose the right dimensions and board type. You can also browse the FEFCO catalogue for other box styles.
RSC box or another box style?
The RSC box covers most transport and storage needs. In some cases, however, another style is a better fit:
- die-cut boxes: for special shapes, tape-free closures or shelf presentation;
- industrial corrugated boxes/containers: for very heavy or very large products;
- export packaging kits: corrugated board, a wooden pallet and VCI bags, for metal parts transported over long distances.
Lead time depends on the box style you choose. RSC boxes are generally the simplest option to produce.
