Good packaging design does not end on the day the product reaches the shelf or the customer. Packaging has to stay relevant: protect properly, communicate clearly and fit the way the product is sold today. In this article you will learn what relevance means for packaging, when it is worth reviewing and how to test it before series production.
What does relevant packaging design mean?
Relevance means the packaging meets the current needs of the product and of the person who receives it. It is not just a question of graphics. The shape, the material, the way the box opens and the way it moves through the warehouse and transport all matter.
Relevant packaging meets a few simple conditions:
- it protects the product along the entire route, from the packing line to the customer;
- it shows quickly what the product is and who makes it;
- it suits the sales channel: retail shelf, B2B distribution or direct delivery;
- it is easy to assemble and does not slow down the packing team;
- it uses the right material, without excess.
If one of these conditions is no longer met, the packaging loses value, even if it looks good.
Why is no packaging design ever final?
The market changes, and customer expectations change with it. A design that looks modern today may look dated in a few years. Likewise, a new product in the range or a new sales channel may require different dimensions or a different type of closure.
The first version of a pack is never perfect either. Even the big brands adjust their boxes all the time. The initial version should be reviewed once it is in use, and any problems you notice should be corrected.
Signs that it is time for a review:
- you receive complaints about products damaged in delivery;
- the packing team loses time assembling the box;
- you have changed the size or weight of the product;
- the packaging no longer reflects your company's current visual identity;
- customers ask for a different delivery format, for example on pallets or as individual parcels.
Ignoring these signs is costly, whatever the size of the company. Unsuitable packaging means returns, lost time and a weaker image.
How does graphic design connect with structural design?
Many people think of packaging design only as printing: logo, colours, text. In practice, the visual side depends on how the box is built. Good graphics on a box that deforms or is hard to open do not help the product.
That is why packaging development has two parts that must be worked on together:
- Structural design – defines the shape, internal dimensions, board type, closure system and any inserts.
- Graphic design – places the information and brand elements on the surfaces that are actually visible once the box is assembled.
When both start from the same plan, the result is a box that looks good and works properly.
Why does a sample matter before production?
A technical drawing or a 3D rendering does not tell you everything. Only with the sample in your hands can you see how the product fits, how easily the box folds and how the print looks on real board.
At WEPADI, new packaging projects go through a sample before series production. This lets you check:
- whether the internal dimensions fit the product;
- whether the board is strong enough;
- whether assembly is quick for your team;
- whether the graphic elements fall in the right places.
Corrections made at the sample stage are much simpler than those made after a full run has been produced.
How does WEPADI help with new or updated packaging?
WEPADI is a family business, producing corrugated packaging since 2011. We work with corrugated board, pressed cardboard and duplex board. We manufacture in Timișoara and deliver across Romania and the European Union. We work with businesses only.
For packaging design we offer:
- graphic design for box printing;
- packaging design and structural design, from idea to mock-up;
- a sample before production starts;
- in-house production, following ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001;
- assembly and just-in-time delivery, if you need it.
The minimum order quantity depends on the box size and board type, and you can check a sample before production. We send you a quote within 24 hours. Lead time depends on the type of box you choose.
Relevant packaging is built in stages
Packaging design is not a one-off decision. It starts from sound structural design, is checked on a sample and is adjusted as the product and the market change.
